Traveling to a bowl game – part I

Bowl games are great for college fans. These contests give a college fan one more chance to socialize, and don the school colors. It’s also a great chance to bask in the sun if you’re going to a warm weather bowl like the Rose or Orange bowls. It may even be a chance for a family mini vacation. Do your homework first and think about a few things that are important before you make plans.

 

• Get a weather forecast or average monthly temperature for your bowl venue. It’s warm in Southern California and Hawaii in late December or January, but it isn’t always warm in Florida or Texas.

• Realize that tourist destinations like Florida, California and Hawaii are very busy in December and January. Reservations at good hotels are hard to get and expensive.

• Frequent flyer miles usually take longer to avoid blacked-out seats in this tourist season than mid-summer.

• Schools offer plans that can be expensive (some Notre Dame packages are $2,250 for each person), but include game tickets, transportation and rooms.

 

Here’s a great plane, bus, or car snack mix for when you are traveling to a bowl venue.

 

Ingredients

¼ cup raw almonds

¼ cup raw walnuts

¼ cup raw cashews

¼ cup raisins

¼ cup dried cranberries

¼ cup dried apricots

¼ cup banana chips

Sea salt

 

Prepare

Line a baking dish with parchment paper, put nuts onto parchment paper, sprinkle on the salt, then bake at 350 degrees for 10 or more minutes till browned. Mix nuts with dried fruits. The mix can be stored in an air-tight container at room temperature for a few days. If you want more sweetness add chocolate chips to taste after the mix has cooled.
